Abstract

© 2017 Elsevier Ltd This study evaluates the physical and chemical effects of the sewerage environment on the corrosion of Portland cement concrete (PCC), sulfur-resistance cement concrete (SRC) and modified Sulfur concrete (MSC), through the carbonation depth measurements and the corrosion of reinforcing steel. The in-situ study showed high resistivity of MSC to the sewerage environment over PCC and SRC. Alkalinity test of PCC and SRC showed neutralization depth of 3.8 mm and 3.2 mm, respectively. Whereas, MSC showed no alkalinity change indicating excellent protection to reinforcement in sewerage environment. Also, the PCC and SRC showed an increase in the number of pores and pores’ size, and connectivity after exposure to the sewerage environment, while insignificant change was observed in the pore system of the MSC.
