Abstract

Egypt's water policy has long been intricately tied to its reliance on the Nile River, a vital lifeline for the nation since ancient times. However, constructing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) presents a formidable challenge to Egypt's water security, prompting the re-evaluation of its policies and strategies. This chapter explores the historical and political context regarding Egypt's water policy, the implications of the GERD on its water resources, and the challenges it faces in maintaining food security amidst water scarcity. The chapter explores the necessity for comprehensive and sustainable water policies addressing water reuse, groundwater extraction, and food imports. It recommends modern water management strategies and emphasizes the importance of a collaborative, region-wide approach to Nile River resource management. Egypt can navigate its water security challenges by prioritizing equitable agreements and fostering coordination among Nile Basin countries to ensure a prosperous future.
