Cultural Interpretations: Exploring Beliefs and Perceptions Surrounding Supernatural Forces Versus Mental Illness: a Qualitative Study of Emirati Generational Differences

Abstract

Brief introduction: This study aims to explore how young and older Emirati adults perceive and distinguish mental illness symptoms (MIS) and supernatural forces symptoms (SFS), such as Jinn possession, the evil eye, and black magic. It explores the role of culture in influencing individuals' understanding of mental health and how these beliefs impact the recognition and treatment of such symptoms in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Method: The study employs a qualitative research design, utilising semistructured interviews with nine Emirati young adults (ages 18-30 years) and eight Emirati older adults (ages 60 years and above). A manual thematic analysis was conducted on the interview data to identify recurring patterns, themes, beliefs, and perceptions related to mental illness and supernatural phenomena. Results: The thematic analysis revealed four key themes shaping participants' perceptions: mental health symptoms and psychological distress, spiritual interpretations and supernatural beliefs (such as Jinn possession, sorcery, and the evil eye), differentiating mental illness from supernatural causes, and generational differences in perceptions of mental illness. The study found that young Emirati participants, who tend to be more educated and exposed to contemporary medical systems, are more likely to attribute mental health problems like depression and anxiety to chemical imbalances or heredity, and prefer psychiatry as their primary treatment approach, contrasting with the more spiritual and culturally grounded views of older adults. Significant contributions: This study contributes to understanding the intersection of cultural beliefs and mental health. It emphasises the role of religious vi and supernatural frameworks in shaping mental health perceptions and beliefs. It highlights the need to integrate cultural sensitivity when addressing mental health issues in the UAE. Gap filled: The research fills a gap in the literature by examining mental illness through both Western psychological perspectives and local cultural beliefs.

Arabic Abstract

تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى استكشاف كيفية إدراك الشباب وكبار السن الإماراتيين لأعراض الأمراض النفسية (MIS ) وأعراض القوى الخارقة للطبيعة (SFS)، مثل مس الجن والعين الشريرة والسحر الأسود، وكيفية تمييزهم لها. وتبحث الدراسة دور العادات والتقاليد التي تؤثرعلى فهم الأفراد للصحة النفسية، وكيف تؤثر هذه المعتقدات على التعرف على هذه الأعراض وعلاجها في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة. تعتمد الدراسة على تصميم بحث نوعي، باستخدام مقابلات شبه منظمة مع 9 شباب إماراتيين (تترواح أعمارهم بين 18 و 30 عاما( و 8 كبارُ إماراتيين( 60عاما فأكثر). أجري تحليل موضوعي يدوي لبيانات المقابلات لتحديد الأنماط والمواضيع والمعتقدات والتصورات المتكررة المتعلقة بالأمراض النفسية والظواهر الخارقة للطبيعة. كشف التحليل الموضوعي عن أربعة مواضيع رئيسية تُشكل تصورات المشاركين: أعراض الصحة النفسية، والتفسيرات الروحية والمعتقدات الخارقة للطبيعة ( مثل مس الجن والسحر والعين الشريرة)، والتمييز بين الأمراض النفسية والأسباب الخارقة للطبيعة، والاختلافات بين الأجيال في تصورات الأمراض النفسية. وجدت الدراسة أن المشاركين الإماراتيين الشباب، الأكثر تعليما واطلاعا على الأنظمة الطبية المعاصرة، يميلون أكثر إلى عزو مشاكل الصحة النفسية، مثل الإكتئاب والقلق، إلى اختلال التوازن الكيميائي أو الوراثة، ويفضلون الطب النفسي كنهج علاجي أساسي، على عكس الرؤى الروحانية والثقافية لكبار السن. تُسهم هذه الدراسة في فهم التداخل بين المعتقدات الثقافية والصحة النفسية. وتُبرزضرورة مراعاة الحساسية الثقافية عند معالجة قضايا الصحة النفسية في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة. يُسهم البحث في سد فجوة في الأدبيات من خلال دراسة الأمراض النفسية من منظوري علم النفس الغربي والمعتقدات الثقافية المحلية.
