Abstract
This chapter is one of three edited transcripts from an interview with Malas that begins with his definition of an auteur. It reviews his formative years in the cities of Quneitra and Damascus that would be reflected in his later films, as well as his film studies at the VGIK film school (Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography) in Moscow. Malas elaborates on his relationship with his instructor, Igor Talankin, and how he and other students explored new forms of cinema. He also discusses his relationship with Egyptian novelist, Sonallah Ibrahim, in the process of making his student film, Everything is Alright Mr. Police Officer (1973) and its connection to the 1967 Arab"“Israeli War.
