Abstract

In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the great majority of higher education institutions apply English-medium instruction and hire teachers internationally, many of whom do not speak Arabic though this is the official language of the country. Nevertheless, the presence of Arabic in the teaching and learning process is undeniable, and not utilizing the potential of students’ linguistic and cultural repertoires in the many pedagogical settings in the UAE would be a waste of resources. Therefore, this chapter addresses mainly a variety of methods and techniques that can be used to apply a plurilingual stance in educational institutions, specifically in the UAE, which can be transferred to other Arabian Peninsula contexts. In other words, considering that plurilingual education can be beneficial for students in the Arabian Peninsula, both authors, non-speakers of Arabic, use their own experience in two higher education institutions in the UAE to suggest a practical catalog of a plurilingual approach to education.
