Abstract
Oil-rich countries in the Arabian Gulf have for decades been the prime destination for migrants from South Asia. The sponsorship-based temporary migration systems in the GCC countries are among the largest receivers of labour migrants in the world, and migrants from populous South Asian countries—such as India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh—dominate these migrations. In this chapter, we explore the complexities of South Asian migrations to the Gulf, such as the dynamic of recurrent and multinational, temporary migrations in the region, and the nexus of migration drivers, migrants’ aspirations, and their abilities for further migration.
