Abstract
The United Arab Emirates (UAE), as a small state with a middle power capability, has transformed itself since early 2002 from a marginalized state to being one of the most active players regionally and internationally. There is no doubt that the UAE’s foreign policy is influenced not only by the contextual environment of the Middle East, but also by domestic realities that include economic factors, leadership, and social dimensions. This chapter elaborates the strategies being employed by the UAE to achieve its aspirations, as well as the systemic and domestic drivers of this new diplomacy.
