Abstract
This entry provides an overview of the key benefits of language assessment and evaluation. Through an exploration of different types of assessment often used in a language learning program, the important benefits of language assessment are discussed relative to teaching, learning, and the curriculum. While the discussion of the different types of assessment is brief, the benefits associated with each are examined from a variety of perspectives (e.g., the teacher, the student, the curriculum developer, the program evaluator, the institution, etc.). Implications for TESOL professionals and language programs are provided in an effort to promote best practices in language assessment and evaluation.
