Task-Oriented Communication and Optimization Framework for 6G Non-Terrestrial Networks: Challenges and Solutions

Abstract
With the evolution of 6G technology toward space-air-ground integration, Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) face dual challenges of diverse task requirements and uncertain network environments due to their characteristics of wide-area coverage, dynamic node mobility, and constrained resources. Traditional communication architectures struggle to ensure quality-of-service for high-value tasks under dynamic topologies and limited resources, whereas the task-oriented communication framework has emerged as a promising solution to address the challenges of dynamic and resource-constrained 6G NTNs. In this article, we present a task-oriented 6G NTN framework to optimize communication and resource scheduling in mission-critical scenarios. By integrating path optimization, resource scheduling, low-latency prediction, and edge computing, the framework dynamically adapts to varying network conditions and prioritizes high-value tasks. Then, we provide a case study in disaster recovery scenarios to validate its effectiveness in ensuring reliable and low-latency communication while maintaining high resource efficiency. Finally, we explore key challenges and future research directions, paving the way for scalable and robust 6G NTN deployments.
