Abstract

In this chapter, I provide an overview of the key approaches, publications, and scholars that have characterized the English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) field over the past two decades, with particular reference to English for Specific Purposes (ESP). In doing so, I will discuss how ELF has been viewed by ESP scholars and others, and the impact that this has had beyond the confines of ESP research. The chapter will look at ELF in different geographical locations, notably in Europe and Asia where much of the research has been located, and it will review ESP work that has been done on specific types of ELF interactions in business and the professions. My intention will be to show how ESP research can do much to further our understanding of how ELF is used across many different domains within society.
