Abstract

Considering the present battery consumer market scenario, it is inevitable to have distinct varieties of batteries for different applications. Since their size requirement ranges from minuscule to macro, batteries are currently manufactured in different dimensions and shapes. Numerous battery designs are available and are revolutionizing growth in the respective fields. There are various criteria for classifying batteries, here, they are categorized based on the mode of energy storage as external and internal battery energy storage systems. External batteries are widely utilized in the massive energy storage of the renewable energy sector, and internal energy storage batteries are generally used in portable electronic devices and electric vehicles. Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are external energy storage systems and are commonly used in the sustainable and renewable energy sector; amongst them, the all-liquid vanadium RFB is presently the most sought-after technology. Other variations in RFBs comprise solid-gas, solid-liquid, gas-liquid, and non-aqueous configurations, which are being tried and tested. In the internal battery category, though lithium-ion batteries are a significant player in consumer electronics, many other battery types, which are crucial in different applications, are discussed. Batteries operating at high and low temperature applications are also presented. This chapter brings together an overview of some commonly used batteries, categorizing them under external and internal energy storage. Information on their chemistries, characteristics, performance, and potential applications are discussed.
