Abstract

Fitness application user retention is difficult due to monotony, a lack of personalization, and motivational factors. Lack of motivation and boredom have been identified in research to be major reasons why users abandon applications. This research applies Artificial Intelligence (AI) and gamification, which is based upon self-determination theory (SDT) with autonomy, competence, and relatedness to increase intrinsic motivation levels. In this study we propose, “GameFit,” which integrates AI with gamification aspects: (1) Personalized fitness and nutrition advice provided with the aid of AI using large language models (LLM); (2) Character evolution graphs showing visual rewards; and (3) Leaderboards with rewards marketplaces. Initial testing of GameFit was conducted involving 50 participants. Results revealed that 78% desired more fun exercise using gamification, 71% preferred AI to personalize, and 64% preferred rewards such as coupons or discounts.
