EBChain: Blockchain-Based Peer-to-Peer Energy Bartering System

Abstract
The growing adoption of distributed energy resources has created a need for decentralized mechanisms capable of coordinating local energy exchanges without relying on centralized operators. Although blockchain-based peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading has been widely studied, blockchain-based energy bartering remains largely unexplored in on-chain settings. This paper presents EBChain, a blockchain-based P2P energy bartering system that enables prosumers and consumers to exchange energy through both direct trading and non-monetary bartering using smart contracts. EBChain integrates our previously proposed P2P Energy Bartering algorithm into a private Ethereum environment to autonomously manage energy selling offers, buying requests, and bartering requests in a transparent and tamper-resistant manner. To evaluate the feasibility and scalability of the proposed system, we conduct on-chain experiments using real residential energy data, considering system sizes ranging from 10 to 300 participants. The results show that total gas consumption grows approximately linearly with the number of participants, indicating predictable scalability, while execution latency increases moderately as the system size grows. The experiments also reveal that bartering is more prominent in small-to-medium market sizes, whereas direct trading increasingly dominates in larger markets. These findings demonstrate the practicality of blockchain-enabled P2P energy bartering and highlight the potential of smart contracts to support decentralized energy exchange.
