Reconnecting with nature: Biophilic buildings, businesses and urban scenes for a sustainable future

Abstract

In response to rapid urbanization, biodiversity loss, and social fragmentation, this paper argues for sustainability frameworks that integrate ecological, cultural, and social dimensions. Drawing on the concept of biophilia, it examines the intersection of biophilic architecture and biophilic businesses in Abu Dhabi. Through qualitative case studies, field observations, and interviews, the study analyzes landmark architectural projects and heritage-rooted enterprises embedded in local knowledge, renewable materials, and cultural narratives. It introduces the concept of biophilic scenes to capture how architecture, businesses, and lifestyle practices converge into regenerative urban ecosystems. Findings reveal a dual mode of value creation: (1) tangible ecological and well-being benefits generated by architecture, and (2) intangible cultural, social, and heritage value produced by businesses. By integrating these dimensions, biophilic scenes can embed sustainability in everyday life and support regenerative, culture-led urban development aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
