Abstract

This chapter explores the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in mental health surveillance within educational settings, focusing on its effectiveness in detecting early signs of psychological distress and its alignment with ethical standards. Drawing on emerging applications such as chatbots, sentiment analysis, and machine learning systems, the chapter examines how AI can increase access to mental health support for students while also raising concerns about privacy, consent, and surveillance. By integrating the frameworks of Surveillance Capitalism and the Ethics of Care, the discussion highlights the dual potential of AI as both a transformative support tool and an ethical challenge. The chapter concludes with recommendations for transparent and student-centered implementation, identifying key areas for future research, including the development of culturally sensitive and longitudinally tested AI tools in line with Sustainable Development Goal 3.
