Abstract

Metaverse-based virtual reality (VR) applications hold significant promise for supporting children with dyslexia through immersive, personalized learning experiences. However, deploying such applications in real-world settings with vulnerable populations introduces operational challenges that the existing literature has not adequately addressed. This paper presents a case study of a metaverse-based VR learning application deployed with 12 children with dyslexia aged 8 to 13 years, primarily in therapy centers in the UAE, examining the quality of service (QoS), privacy, and security challenges encountered. Drawing on direct observations using Meta Quest 3 VR headsets and the Frame platform, we document QoS-related challenges, privacy risks specific to AI-enabled metaverse applications, and security challenges inherent to multi-stakeholder deployments involving vulnerable populations. We further present a cross-dimensional analysis demonstrating that these challenges interact in ways that carry ethical weight: QoS degradation affects learning continuity, privacy gaps expose sensitive disability-related data, and inadequate security puts vulnerable children at risk. Based on these findings, we propose five design guidelines for developers, institutions, and practitioners. This work contributes empirical grounding to an underexplored intersection of QoS, privacy, security, and vulnerable population deployment in educational metaverse contexts.
