Abstract
As the world has increasingly embraced remote education, driven in part by the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is anticipated that the transition to online learning will continue to evolve and persist beyond the pandemic. Therefore, it is essential to optimize learners’ experiences through existing online teaching technologies. This chapter aims to present and describe a new approach using an interactive online tool called “Camtasia” for an undergraduate Environmental Sciences course at a federal higher education institute in the UAE. A sequence of technological tools was employed and evaluated. Compared to conventional online tools such as PowerPoint (PPT) and Narrated PowerPoint, Camtasia offers prelecture content-centered sessions incorporated with short quizzes, providing instant self-feedback for students and formative measurement of their comprehension of the lecture contents for the educator. Consequently, the educator can customize the second stage of this flipped classroom model according to the students’ specific needs, leading to increased student engagement, especially for visual learners. This chapter provides a rationale behind the adoption of these tools different technology techniques and discusses the value each tool has added to the learning process for both students and instructors, suggesting a promising paradigm for further analysis. Experiences such as the one described in this chapter are likely to characterize the future of education.
