Abstract

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) improves the performance and energy efficiency of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) by centralizing routing decisions. However, most existing SDN-based routing protocols have been evaluated under static network assumptions, which are unsuitable for mobility-driven IoT applications such as e-health, smart cities, wildlife monitoring, and military surveillance. This paper is among the first to evaluate SDN-based WSN routing in mobile environments using the SDNWISE framework in the COOJA simulator. Four representative protocols - Dijkstra-based Shortest Path SDN (SPSDN), Reinforcement Learning-based SDN (RLSDN), Energy-Aware SDN (EASDN), and Naïve Bayes-based SDN (NBSDN) - are assessed under varying node mobility speeds in terms of control overhead, packet loss rate, network lifetime, and throughput. Results show that mobility significantly degrades overall network performance. Nevertheless, NBSDN consistently outperforms the other protocols across all metrics, demonstrating superior robustness and adaptability to dynamic network topologies.
