Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming education, enabling self-directed learning while raising concerns for academic integrity and student well-being. This autoethnographic study reflects on my students’ use of plagiarism detection, generative AI, and AI-assisted writing tools. Guided by Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory, it highlights how AI provides efficiency yet also fosters anxiety, self-doubt, and reduced ownership of learning. Findings show students often struggle to apply critical thinking due to overreliance on AI. The chapter concludes with recommendations for supportive environments that empower learners rather than undermine them.
