Abstract
The present study focuses on the adoption of AI and Autonomous Systems (AIAS) as a lasting impact on the constructive alignment between the pillars of the education environment, including design, delivery, and assessment processes, through the support of ‘Constructivist Learning Theory’ and ‘Human-Computer Interface. The prospect of intelligent tutoring systems and generative intelligent machines has been significant; currently, the scarcity of research conducted by educators is notable, especially regarding the importation of the systemic intelligent AIAS. Although it is true that past research is mostly based on the examination of feasible capabilities, it is arguable that complexity is not managed. Evidence collected using a qualitative survey conducted among 200 purposively sampled individuals in 15 Middle Eastern/North African countries. We found varying degrees of integration between teachers and GenAI across technical, organizational, and personal levels. With respect to the design, there is an opportunity to leverage Intelligent Content Creation (ICC) and the adaptive nature of an Adaptive Learning Platform (AALP). Regarding delivery, there is a possibility of using Intelligent Tutoring and Coaching (ITC) and an Autonomous Teaching Assistant (ATA). Assessment also presents an opportunity through Automated Grading and Feedback (AGF) and Predictive Analytics for Student Success (PASS). This paper provides a holistic view of AI adoption in MENA universities, including challenges and opportunities in education from technical, organizational, and individual perspectives, and factors related to GenAI as a partner in teaching/educational relations/capabilities.
