Abstract
The rapid progress of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in education requires ongoing professional development for educators to remain updated with technological and pedagogical advancements. This chapter highlights the crucial role of such development in equipping instructors with the necessary skills and mindsets for an evolving educational landscape. Through a reflective practice framework, three instructors from a UAE federal university shared their transformative experiences with a GenAI-focused professional development program. The framework, comprising reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action phases, facilitates real-time learning and critical post-learning evaluation. The structured professional development (PD) program included three stages: Explore, Envision, and Enact, each designed to immerse educators in AI integration within educational contexts. The Explore phase introduced instructors to the multifaceted implications of AI, helping them navigate through potential challenges and opportunities. This phase laid the groundwork for the Envision stage, where live virtual workshops and peer discussions sparked innovative ideas for AI-driven learning activities, policies, and educational structures. Finally, the Enact phase enabled instructors to collaboratively design and implement GenAI-driven projects, fostering a rich environment for peer-to-peer learning and reflective practice. The chapter emphasizes the significance of these stages in enhancing educators’ understanding of AI tools, such as ChatGPT, promoting critical thinking, and developing ethical frameworks for AI use in education. This underscores the importance of ongoing professional development and reflective practice for successfully integrating AI into teaching. The insights gained from this program provide valuable recommendations for effectively introducing AI into educational settings, emphasizing practical applications and strategies for future innovation in AI integration.
