Abstract

Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are used in various applications. This chapter discusses BESS applications in three main sectors: portable electronics, stationary energy storage, and automobiles. Each application has specific battery chemistry requirements, with selection criteria based on factors, such as size, efficiency, safety, and other application-specific considerations to ensure optimal performance. The chapter covers the fundamentals of common battery types used in these applications. Additionally, it highlights current trends and future requirements for developing battery technologies suitable for the advancement of these sectors.
