Abstract

Artistic expression has long been associated with emotional experience, meaningmaking, and psychological transformation. Recent advances in neuroscience and psychology have provided empirical evidence that engagement with art can influence brain plasticity and emotional regulation processes. This chapter explores how artistic expression, examined through the lens of art history, contributes to neuroplastic changes and the regulation of emotional states. Integrating findings from neuroscience, neuroaesthetics, and psychology with historical perspectives on art, the chapter examines how sustained interaction with visual art activates neural networks involved in emotion, cognition, and self-regulation. Artistic practices across historical periods are discussed as structured experiences that engage perception, memory, and affective processing, thereby shaping neural pathways associated with emotional awareness and regulation.
